Hair color facts:
The right hair color can give beautiful results, the wrong color can create disaster and cause hours of grief.  All hair color should be based on several factors: the starting color (natural or artificial);  the color desired;  the hair's texture (fine, medium, coarse); the porosity or condition of the hair; the contributing or underlying pigment in the hair; and the type of color product being used.

Why does hair color fade?
Permanent or demi-permanent color is designed to fade depending on the care taken to prevent it.  Many shampoos dissolve hair color.  The stronger the shampoo the more aggressive the fade because it is designed to attract color as well as dirt and oil.
Chlorine and other chemicals in water increase color fading.
Chlorine eats away at the cuticle layer exposing the color to more fading.
Copper in the water can cause hair to turn green or other forms of color shift,  ie. ashy, brassy,or dull.
Sea water and Sun will also bleach out and fade color.

Hair facts:
The average human head has between 120,000-180,000 hairs.  It grows on an average of 1/2 inch per month or 6 inches a year.  The growth cycle of hair is from 4 to 6 years therefore most people cannot grow hair longer than 24-36 inches.  African-American hair is similar to Caucasian hair except that the shape of the hair shaft is different.  African-American hair is oval and resembles a twisted rod, while Caucasian hair is more cylindrical and has fewer twists.
Gray hair is an optical illusion, white hair has no pigment but when interspersed with naturally pigmented hair the illusion is gray.  The more white hair the lighter the shade of gray, the more pigmented hair the more salt and pepper it appears.

Normal healthy hair has a pH value of 4.5-5.5, which is acidic. The cuticle of the hair is closed and in good condition (low porosity).  Healthy hair attracts and holds hair color better and longer than hair that is in poor condition (high porosity). Therefore hair color results are based on the porosity of hair.  Using the same color formula on hair with different stages of porosity will give differing results from the new growth to the previously colored ends. Additionally it will cause more porosity and contribute to more fading or undesireable tones to hold on to the hair ends.

Thermal damage is a common problem with today's hair styles.  Blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons used to style hair can not only damage the hair shaft but moisture inside the shaft can heat to the boiling point and cause the hair to welt and split open and break off(split ends). Reconstructors or Deep Conditioners should be used regularly to help repair damage caused by these tools.  They contain moisturizers and protiens that penetrate and adhear to the hair protecting it from the stress of heat styling.   Additionally, Thermal Styling Protectors, either spray,  mousse or gels must be used on hair prior to styling to safegard hair against heat damage.
